Впервые в истории на обложке журнала Men's Health появился мужчина-трансгендер. Однако лишь половина его тела и лишь в специальном коллекционном издании.
Ранее в этом году журнал заявил, что его ежегодный конкурс Ultimate Men's Health Guy, победитель которого публикуется на обложке, будет открыт для "всех мужчин".
Эйдиан Даулинг, 27-летний трансгендер и энтузиаст фитнеса и здорового образа жизни, выиграл голосование среди читателей онлайн, получив 72 672 голоса. Однако издатели решили выбрать общего победителя, и им стал пожарный из Кентукки Тим Бонифейс, который и появился на стандартной обложке журнала.
На специальной обложке у Даулинга утешительный приз - слева видно половину его тела. Бонифейс и два других победителя включены целиком. "Цветной" победитель, учитель Омари Грей, отрезан с правой стороны. Сам трансгендер не считает, что их отрезали сознательно.
Внутри журнала есть целый разворот с Даулингом, есть там и его фотография с женой.

One of the Youth from yesterday asked me about being Trans and dating. They were very scared no one would understand them, or more importantly love them. My wife @magickal_lens Jenilee has been with me since my 3rd shot of hormones and we have grown in our relationship as we both have grown into the humans we are today. It IS possible to find love and be loved. I hear stories all the time of Trans Love being spread between loving individuals. The struggle growing up Trans and not having any support systems out there is why we have 41% of Trans Teens attempting suicide each year- NOT including those who were successful at doing so. As a teenager who hated his body to the point of trying to break my arms, legs, cutting, wrapping my hips, covering myself in heavy black clothing, never enjoying myself bc of my body image- I think this youth saw me standing proud and found that inspirational." I can understand the points made about this image, and I respect those points enough to make a statement trying to clear up rather then defend this image. This teenager who posted it/made it has expressed how he found courage and positivity in this image and was hoping others would find it too.
